According to Bogden and Biklin (1998), "If you want to understand the way people think about their world and how those definitions are formed you need to get close to them, to hear them talk, and observe them in their day-to-day lives" (p.32). Qualitative allowed the researchers to approach the setting and participants without a predetermined hypothesis. Theory emerged from the data.
